The XPS format never really took off however and has slowly been abandoned by Microsoft. With the Windows 10 April 2018 update, the default XPS file viewer was removed from new installations, although it was not removed from computers that updated from any previous version of Windows 10.
This wikiHow teaches you how to view the contents of an XPS file. The XPS file format is similar to the PDF format in that it contains page layout information meant to look the same on all devices. However, since XPS never really caught on like the PDF format, XPS viewers can be difficult to find. If you're using Windows 10, there's a built-in XPS viewer that allows you to open and convert the file to the PDF format. You can also open and convert XPS files to PDF using Google Drive on any computer, or use an XPS-to-PDF conversion website, which will also work on a phone or tablet.

Since then, Microsoft released the XPS Essentials Pack for Windows XP, Server 2003, and Vista,[34][35] which includes the standalone viewer, an IFilter plug-in that helps Windows Desktop Search index the contents of XPS files, and another plug-in for Windows Explorer to help generate thumbnails for XPS files.[34] Installing this pack enables operating systems prior to Windows Vista to use the XPS print spooler[36] instead of the older GDI-based spooler.[37] The XPS print spooler can produce better quality prints for printers that directly consume the XPS format.[38]
